Weddings Redefined

Stories and advice from Bernadette Smith, visionary owner of 14 Stories, the nation's first firm specializing in creating legal LGBT weddings. Our weddings are unique, personal, beautiful and still, historical. We have offices in Boston and New York.

We are Visionary

Bernadette Coveney Smith - Tuesday, June 15, 2010
In between weddings on Cape Cod last week, I dashed off to a luxury wedding industry summit in the Cayman Islands.  It was an incredible way to meet some legends of the industry and have complete access to brilliant minds more than happy to share their experiences.  Every attendee at this conference was there to kick their business into high gear and poised to push themselves to the next level.  I was the only person at the conference in the business of gay weddings.

And what a business it is...  Late one night, on his terrace, I shared a drink with Colin Cowie, David Berke (the President of Colin's company) and Rosalind from Two Bright Lights.  We talked about many things but then the topic of gay weddings came up and I was asked (as I often am), what's the difference between a straight wedding and a gay wedding?

As I began to talk through the differences, Colin's eyes opened wide and it was clear I was sharing some new insight he had never previously considered. And just like that, the roles were reversed and I was educating an industry legend.

Our company, 14 Stories, was the first of its kind in the U.S. and we are still leading the way with research, data and insight into the engaged LGBT couple.  I have the most exhilarating career, coming into the lives of the sweetest couples ever and producing them magnificent weddings - and then sharing the information I gather with the wedding industry at large to ultimately reduce homophobia and heterosexism.

It doesn't get any better than this...

I'm in the Cayman Islands

Bernadette Coveney Smith - Tuesday, June 08, 2010
If you're trying to reach me (Bernadette) this week, I'm actually at a wedding industry conference in the Cayman Islands.  Tough life, I know!  It's a great event and I'm excited to catch up with some of my wedding pals from across the country and hopefully make some cool new friends - and hopefully bring back some fabulous ideas for our clients!

We have a plan to deal with urgent matters, though, so please feel free to still call or email if necessary.  I'll be fully back in the loop on June 14.

It's a busy time in the office - we had one fabulous gay wedding in Provincetown this past Saturday and three more big ones (including this upcoming Saturday) before the month is through.  We're really proud of our weddings and will be sharing some photos in the blog so please stay tuned!

Ask Me Anything

Bernadette Coveney Smith - Monday, February 15, 2010
Hello and happy belated Valentine's Day.  I'm excited for all of you who are recently engaged and planning yourself a wonderful gay wedding.  It's an exciting time, isn't it?  I'm really happy for you.

I wanted to tell you that I always feel really guilty about celebrating Valentine's Day because when I was 19 years old, my sister in law died in a car crash on Valentine's Day.  Since then, I've always had mixed feelings about the holiday but am still a huge fan of romance and would love to hear any of your romantic stories from Sunday.  Seriously, I'd love to.  What did your significant other do for you?  Or what did you plan for your S.O.?

I also wanted to let you know that I've been answering questions - any questions at all, really - on this website:  www.formspring.me/gaywedding.  Feel free to ask questions there and I'll answer them there - or if you have burning questions about your own wedding plans, please email me at ask @ 14stories.com and I'll respond to those questions in this blog.  I love hearing from engaged couples so please ask away!

I've been doing this a long time, longer than anyone else, and I can pretty much answer everything.  You can also ask me personal stuff if you want to know more about me, or Jen, or both of us.

I hope you have a great week.

Bernadette

Stories from 2009

Bernadette Coveney Smith - Wednesday, December 23, 2009
The states of New Hampshire, Vermont and Iowa all legalized gay marriage in 2009.  DC is probably coming next.  Despite some setbacks, there are many reasons I find hope as I reflect this holiday season.

In 2009, this company helped 53 same-sex couples legally marry.  These couples represented 24 states, including Massachusetts.  I personally met about 2/3 of these couples and got to hear some wonderful stories of triumph, destiny and the mystery of falling in love.  Some of the stories:

  • A groom toasting his guests who traveled all over the world by saying, "Thank God to Massachusetts for letting us come here to marry."
  • Going with my transgender client and her fiancee to try on wedding dresses, and seeing her elation with finding the perfect dress within an hour.
  • Days of client-planner bonding during marathon site visits with a number of different clients.
  • Seeing the joy of a client after his seriously ill sister made the trip across the country to attend the wedding (and had a great time in good health).
  • Hearing the story of a couple together 18 years who, every month, celebrate the date they first met, and never, ever take each other for granted.
  • Walking down the aisle at my own wedding, hand in hand with Jen, and seeing all the people who came to be there with us that day.
  • A gay horah and a lesbian horah - it brings me such joy to see my clients up on those chairs.
  • Getting tons of support and positive feedback when we renamed the company to 14 Stories.
  • Hearing the story of a couple who are part of an ACLU lawsuit against the state of Arkansas because the state prevents "unmarried couples" from adopting, and these great guys want a kid.
I'm hopeful that the marriage equality movement will continue its forward momentum in 2010.  I promise that 14 Stories will continue leading the way, nationally, in gay weddings.  We vow to continue educating and screening wedding industry vendors and continue providing the same great customer service you've come to expect.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and look forward to hearing more of your beautiful stories in 2010.

More on the Name Change

Bernadette Coveney Smith - Monday, November 09, 2009
I know a lot of people liked the name It's About Time.  And it was a cool and catchy name and it worked great for almost six years.  I receive a lot of compliments on that name.

But it's not about time anymore.  Gay marriage is here, and here to stay.

We hope that our new name, 14 Stories, will also ultimately be cool and catchy, once you get the gist of what it means.

14 is the number of individual plaintiffs in the Goodridge case which legalized gay marriage in Massachusetts - incidentally, the six year anniversary of that ruling is November 17

The 14th amendment of the U.S. Constitution was used to dismantle segregation in the 1960s after Brown v the Board of Education; it was used to end the ban on interracial marriage in Loving v Virginia; and it was used to end the ban on sodomy in Lawrence v Texas.  All historic victories for civil rights.

We wanted to acknowledge that past as we move forward.  We are inspired by stories, the stories of the past, the stories of our clients and the stories that are still being written.

A little bit of housekeeping:
Thanks for your support.  So, do you like the new name?

Bernadette

Love it. Especially when you explained the reasons behind the name.
"But it's not about time anymore. Gay marriage is here, and here to stay."
Gay Marriage is now more of an noun rather than an adjective, less novelty, more of a commonality. Good move.

I love, love, L O V E the new name. It's a fresh start, yet it's a reminder of WHY you do what you do. (Not to mention, it's catchy too!)

Congratulations.
