Why You Should Have a Videographer for your Gay Wedding

Bernadette Coveney Smith - Thursday, March 25, 2010
Videographers get a bum rap.  There's this terrible stereotype of the giant spotlight on the dancefloor in the face of your guests and the cheesy, glossy edited montage video.

Gay couples in particular, are sensitive to and want to avoid this over-the-top, classless cheesiness.  Not all videographers are like that.  The best are filmmakers, capturing your wedding in a documentary style.

Isn't this lovely?

We highly recommend our videographer, Generations CinemaStories.  They have lots of experience with gay weddings and we know that we'll be proud to show our kids our wedding documentary some day.  It's for posterity.  And gay weddings are historical.  I think they should be captured on video as much as possible.

Are you planning to have a gay wedding film?  Why or why not?

Stories from 2009

Bernadette Coveney Smith - Wednesday, December 23, 2009
The states of New Hampshire, Vermont and Iowa all legalized gay marriage in 2009.  DC is probably coming next.  Despite some setbacks, there are many reasons I find hope as I reflect this holiday season.

In 2009, this company helped 53 same-sex couples legally marry.  These couples represented 24 states, including Massachusetts.  I personally met about 2/3 of these couples and got to hear some wonderful stories of triumph, destiny and the mystery of falling in love.  Some of the stories:

  • A groom toasting his guests who traveled all over the world by saying, "Thank God to Massachusetts for letting us come here to marry."
  • Going with my transgender client and her fiancee to try on wedding dresses, and seeing her elation with finding the perfect dress within an hour.
  • Days of client-planner bonding during marathon site visits with a number of different clients.
  • Seeing the joy of a client after his seriously ill sister made the trip across the country to attend the wedding (and had a great time in good health).
  • Hearing the story of a couple together 18 years who, every month, celebrate the date they first met, and never, ever take each other for granted.
  • Walking down the aisle at my own wedding, hand in hand with Jen, and seeing all the people who came to be there with us that day.
  • A gay horah and a lesbian horah - it brings me such joy to see my clients up on those chairs.
  • Getting tons of support and positive feedback when we renamed the company to 14 Stories.
  • Hearing the story of a couple who are part of an ACLU lawsuit against the state of Arkansas because the state prevents "unmarried couples" from adopting, and these great guys want a kid.
I'm hopeful that the marriage equality movement will continue its forward momentum in 2010.  I promise that 14 Stories will continue leading the way, nationally, in gay weddings.  We vow to continue educating and screening wedding industry vendors and continue providing the same great customer service you've come to expect.

I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and look forward to hearing more of your beautiful stories in 2010.

Bernadette

Love Stories

Bernadette Coveney Smith - Friday, October 23, 2009
I'll never forget when I was a first year undergrad at Boston University, freshly out of the closet and attending LGBA meetings on campus.  There was a brand new lesbian film out - and that didn't happen too often so it was a really big deal.  It was called Go Fish.  The director Rose Troche was speaking after the film at a special screening at the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square.

WOW, what a night.  I was 17, in a theater full of women, watching a love story about two women.  In hindsight, I can admit that some of the acting was kind of poor but at the time, WOW!  It was a love story.  And long before I was a wedding planner, I was a romantic and I've always loved love stories.

One of the first questions I almost always ask a couple is how they met.  I get to see the sparkle in their eyes pretty quickly that way.  And the recurring theme seems to be that it was an instant connection, almost as if there was no choice but to be together.  Straight or gay, this is almost always what I hear.

Of course there are obstacles.  Sometimes those obstacles came in the form of long distance, coming out of the closet for the first time, or even just needing to grow up a little bit first.  But every couple has obstacles and those that make it communicate well through the obstacles and hold hands on the journey together.

If I can get enough volunteers (clients, speak up!), I'll be telling some love stories (likely anonymously) here on the blog from time to time.  And for those who haven't heard it, I'll tell the Jen and Bernadette love story (it's a good one).

Straight or gay, what's your love story?
