Jen and I talked about it and decided not to write ours on our own. We figured there were plenty of gorgeous vows out there - why reinvent the wheel when we might not be so eloquent?! But I love it when I'm standing in the back of the room watching the couple reveal their deeply personal, handwritten vows to each other for the first time. It's truly sweet and I've even seen couples coming in town to elope bring personal vows.
If you choose not to write your own vows, your minister, Celebrant or Justice of the Peace will have a nice selection of choices for you. And there are loads of books on the subject (I have one my clients frequently borrow). But here are some of my favorites, starting with our own vow:
Today I love you completely, as I did yesterday and will tomorrow.
I will be there for you always.
I will share in your dreams, delight in your joys, and comfort you in your sorrows.
I will be your confidant, your counsel and your friend.
When you are not within my sight, you will be within my thoughts.
You are my life, you are my joy;
You are my love, and today, you are my wife.
I, _________ take you __________ to be my partner/husband/wife/spouse for life.
I promise above all else to live in truth with you
And to communicate fully and fearlessly
I give you my hand and my heart
As a sanctuary of warmth and peace
And pledge my love, devotion, faith and honor
As I join my life to yours.
I, ______________, take you _________________
My friend, my love and my lifelong companion.
To share my life with yours,
To build our dreams together,
To support you through times of trouble,
And to rejoice with you in times of happiness.
I promise to treat you with respect, love and loyalty
Through all the trials and triumphs of our lives together.
This commitment is made in love, kept in faith,
Lived in hope, and eternally made new.
Are you writing your own vows or choosing pre-written vows? What did you pick out? Please share your vows with me in the comments!
