How to Get Married in Massachusetts

How do you get married?  In the most basic sense - forgetting about the hoopla of a wedding - how do you get married here in Massachusetts?

  • Ensure you're 18 years or older.
  • Both partners should go to any local town or city hall (my favorite is Cambridge and this is why) with your photo ID.
  • Fill out the paperwork there, swear under oath that there are no legal impediments to your marriage, and pay the fee.  Take and secure the voucher they give you.
  • Return in 3 days (not 3 business days) to pick up your license.
  • Get married by someone legally allowed to marry you in Massachusetts (City Clerk, Justice of the Peace, minister, Celebrant, friend with day pass to marry you).

If you happen to be in a rush follow the instructions below (it's a bit complicated and confusing):
      • Complete steps the first three steps above but tell the City Clerk staff that you will be applying for marriage without delay.
      • Go to the Probate or District court of the county in which you applied for your license and file a petition for marriage without delay.  Pay the fee.
      • Go to the courtroom they instruct you to visit and wait.  When the judge calls you up, swear under oath and answer his or her questions truthfully.
      • Take the signed form the judge gives you and bring it back to the office in the Probate or District Court, and have it certified.
      • Bring the certified copy to the town or city hall where you applied for your license.  Pick up your license.
      • Get married by someone legally allowed to marry you in Massachusetts (City Clerk, Justice of the Peace, minister, Celebrant, friend with day pass to marry you).

If you need us to help, we do it all the time and are glad to guide you through this process painlessly.

          Congratulations on your engagement!
